About Trimley Marshes
Trimley Marshes is an exciting wetland nature reserve created almost entirely from arable land alongside the river Orwell.
Most of the wildlife here today has colonised the site since it was created in 1990 to mitigate against the loss of Fagbury mudflats as a result of the expansion of the neighbouring Port of Felixstowe.
There are wonderful views of the Orwell Estuary and it is an unbeatable wetland for its sheer number and species of birds: wigeon, brent goose, redshank, avocet, tufted duck, ringed plover, common sandpiper, curlew, oystercatcher, reed and sedge warbler. Look out also for Britain’s largest hawker dragonfly, the emperor. Many of the wet meadows are managed by the traditional method of grazing with cattle.
